Google's PageSpeed Tools is one of your best resources for improving web page speed. Not only does it tell you what is slowing down your web page it will also provide you with the optimized images, Javascript, and CSS resources for your page: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/.
The plugin @kulwantnagi mentions is ideal for Wordpress, but be careful some of those plugins might break your site so make sure you test them before you commit to one. I also like W3 Total Cache - it optimizes and caches your website.

I find a lot of trouble speeding up my sites and even developers seem to never do much. I recently moved https://STLmarketers.com to WP Rocket plugin, optimized cache, lessened image size etc. And all the tracking tools, java, and CSS, plugins (that I need) seem to slow it down. It sucks because there isn't much one can do. I've also noticed some themes are just better built for speed.

W3 Total Cache has a lot of security issues. I wouldn't recommend using it.
