If I want to redirect from old page to new page which has same content then which redirect should i use canonical tag or 301 redirect.

If I use canonical tag to redirect on which page should i implement this tag ? my preferred version is new page should i implement the canonical tag on new page or old page with new page url.

    I would personally go with the 301 redirect if that is the preferred content. The value that the old page had should carry over to the new page. Make sure you transition your meta data as well to make sure you don't lose that value as well.

    If you should choose to go with the canonical tag, I would use caution because if you implement it using the new URL on both pages, you lose the value of the old post. If you use the old URL in the tag, your new content will have a harder time indexing, if at all.

    Hi there,

    I think you can use both in a planned manner.

    First you can add canonical tag on page pointing to one that you wish to keep. Let Google crawl it. After few days, you can implement 301 redirect on this page.

    In this way, you will first get rid of from internal content duplication issues and then by redirecting it you will pass on the SEO or Link value (if any) to preferred version.
