One thing a lot of 'hacks' have in common is the fact that they use Other People's Networks. What are the best standard procedures to steal your competitor's traffic (like adwords on their names for example)? I'm looking for non-engineering stuff.

Yeah, a few SEM ideas I've tried:
    - Search retargeting. This is a good way to get in front of people searching for your competitor for cheap on the display network. This has been in a wide beta in Adwords for several years.
    - GSPs on their emails. GSPs are Google Sponsored Promotions, and are the ads you see in Gmail. Target your competitors domains as keywords in these campaigns to target people receiving their emails in Gmail.
    - Search ads. These can be tricky to run profitably, as many members of these sites will search in Google to get to the site rather than go directly. Many companies run ads on their own keywords because they're very cheap (your quality score on your brand keywords will be very high), and convert well. To find success with these you may need to exclude people who are just searching for the brand, or the brand.com, and look for people searching for "brand widgets" or other searches that imply they're looking for something on the site, rather than just going there directly. Remember, you can't use trademarked names in ad text (but you can use them as keywords). You can reproduce these in Bing Ads and Yahoo Gemini to get more volume.
    - Display ads. If they run ads on their site, target it directly with display ads.
    - In Facebook, target people that like that brand. If this is too broad, use some other criteria to reduce and tighten up the audience segment.
    - If Pinterest is the right demographic, try some promoted pins. I don't think there's a great way to specific target people who are using your competitor's product, but it's still a great young channel to use. If your competitor is active there, you can at least target people who are doing searches for their name in Pinterest.

    Hope this helps!

This isn't much of a "hack" or a quick technique, but use SEM Rush or Ahrefs to find their organic search keyword data. Then, create better content assets around those keywords. You will of course need to promote the content via social and link acquisition. Once the content is ranking, you will be "stealing" their organic search traffic (in a way).

In a report on how Google ranks content, getting high-quality links from other websites is still extremely important for search engine rankings.Use an SEO tool such as ahrefs to find companies that are linking to content on your competitor’s site and, if you have higher quality content, then reach out to these sites and request that they link to you instead. If you don’t currently have higher quality content, then create it.

Reverse engineer their social media followers. The closer a competitor, the more likely this is to work. For instance, if you are in the same business and in the same town, your competitors' followers will be more useful to you than if you are in the same business but in a different town.

Well i think you can compete or steal the traffic of your competitor easily. Here i have mentioned two ways how you can.
    No 1.
By Doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization). SEO is one of the power way to improve traffic and conversion of your business. You can search your competitors keywords then start optimizing keywords to rank them higher. you can also use tools (backlinkwatch.com) or many others to steal important back links of you competitors and start building links on them. By using this method you will start following your competitors strategy of generating traffic and conversions but it will take time.
    No 2.
By Doing Google Ad-words. This is the most power full tool bring your website on any position in search engine. You will just need keywords of your competitors to create ads and you can be on the top of your competitors. Paid campaigns are more effective then SEO to get instant results. So, i believe if you want to steal the traffic of your competitors like my ( https://techcrunch.com/ http://mashable.com/ http://techgutter.com/ ) i will definitely go with online campaigns.
Hope this will help you. :)

Check for broken links pointing to your competitors using an SEO tool like ahrefs. Then offer your site/content as an alternative. More really excellent ways to create more backlinks here -> https://ahrefs.com/blog/get-backlinks.

Note: I'm not affiliated with ahrefs in any way.
