It's very simple. Build valuable content and distribute it to the right audience using free and / or paid mediums. The more valuable the content is, the more organic links you 'll gain

Agreed that content marketing is the best strategy. Don't overlook the importance of the promotions aspect, though. Creating great content isn't enough these days since there's so much out there. Every time you create something, you have to know its specific target audience and plan for how you'll reach them.

Think about where in the funnel your target audience is and the best ways to get the content in front of them. For example, if it's middle-of-the-funnel, you can pitch your content to industry publishers and promote it through your email list. But if you're just trying to get your name out there,

AND, if you're mainly trying to just build your backlink portfolio, don't be afraid to be more "tangential" and not so on-brand. This post goes into more about how you get way more links doing that: https://moz.com/blog/tangential-content

This one is an oldie but a goodie: https://growthhackers.com/articles/link-building-strategies-the-complete-list/ - I find it hard to believe that many of these wouldn't still apply, though its fair to assume that perhaps individual efficiencies may have changed.
