I'd like to have some voice of experience on implementing growth hacking for marketing research. Mainly to discover, segment and learn about the target audience.

I found this Product Hunt curated list of Market Research Tools. It's pretty extensive and diverse in my opinion.

Market research is a broad term. We use a few tools at my agency - but it really depends on what you're looking for.

Demographic data - Google Analytics will show you the demographics of visitors to your website.

Marketing Trends - Think with Google or eMarketer are great for this.

Voice of your customer - Qualaroo is great for surveying visitors WHILE they're browsing your website. You can ask them what the reason for their visit is, or what you can do to improve your site experience.

Consumer Research - Survata/Survey Moneky/Google Consumer Surveys allow you to recruit participants based on demographics, house hold income, etc and ask them questions about your brand, product or industry.

UX Feedback - Usertesting.com is great for recruiting participants for UX studies on your site or competitors sites. You capture audio and video feedback of these users as they browse your website.

Pollfish.com - we enable anyone to create a survey in minutes and reach over 235M consumers globally - on their mobile device.
Starts at $1 per survey.... Super fast results - it doesn't get much easier than that for validating market size, product/market fit, marketing concepts, or just consumer opinion.

If it's for a larger product or service (retail) I've heard of crowdtap - they ask current users of your products questions to gain further insight.
