I've been working in Digital Marketing for over 5 yrs. And honestly speaking, Google doesn't give you any positive edge on organic results if you're spending on AdWords.

What matters is the traffic and their behavior on your website. You can bring traffic from any source e.g. email marketing without spending even a single penny on AdWords, your search rankings will still boost.

I agree with Anurag - it is a paid medium in which you are getting specific placement for your dollars. The only way I see paid advertising helping your search rankings is through brand awareness and your website being linked to due to an increase in traffic.

No. It may be true the other way round though: Spending on AdWords might give you incremental traffic. But as paid listings take up ever more space on the SERP, typically your organic traffic is bound to suffer.
If you can get your website to rank for answer boxes, that might be a workaround for that problem.
