Ask GH

My initial thoughts are to have the product offer the question dynamically through a survey/feedback tool like Qualaroo or Mouseflow. The other option I suppose is to have our Account Management team reach out with the question or simply send an email that asks our customers to provide their feedback in a 1 question survey. We were also discussing the notion that "growth hacks" shouldn't be attempted until you know who your core audience or happiest customers are... in this case we don't necessarily know what makes someone our "happiest" or "best" customer so should we even bother with growth tests or this question?

When: Whenever you're trying to ascertain whether you have Product/Market Fit (and if not, gain an understanding of why not)

How: https://survey.io/ (you can also make your own version of this using any other free survey tool if you want).

Where: I would email it to every user. Using Qualaroo implies that all/most people are going to be on your app/site for you to be able to serve this up to them

You can try the Net Promoter Score study asking: "How likely is it that you would recommend our company/product/service to a friend or colleague?", if you are at the stage figuring out why people are using your service and what makes them happy.

Survey Monkey is also a good option to optimize the survey process.
