So, last week I had a discussion with my friend who runs an Internet marketing blog. He (among many other sites) uses a very basic SumoMe-alike style popup for capturing visitor's emails. I argued that I don't think that using such casual popups that don't stand out is really effective. My point was that since internet is so polluted with those kind of same-looking popups people got immune to them. From my experience it is worth to invest some more effort into designing an appealing popup with a better graphical presentation of the message especially for exit-intent and site-load popups as it results in better engagement and conversions. While e-commerce fashion business owners and design websites will normally want to invest more attention on this, should internet marketers and other informational blogs do too? What are your thoughts about this? The problem that I see here is the limitations of existing tools, which normally only allow you to edit predefined HTML templates.

Hey Aljaž, this is an awesome question. We would all love to get as much emails as possible with lead magnets, because the alternative (remarketing) is much more expensive . Here are my 2 cents: 1. An idea: You may want to run an experiment (a/b testing) with your friend and measure the number of contacts raised from A: Simple/Sumo-Me-like popup vs B: A fancy pop-up. It could be done via Google Analytics- experiments or https://www.optimizely.com/ 2. Also consider: a) when to display the popup (wow moment before opt-in, number of sessions, session duration, etc.), b) what is in it for a visitor aka lead magnet (unlock exclusive ...., never miss a ...). I like what Neil Patel http://neilpatel.com/ is doing. Good luck attracting leads and cheers to Ljubljana !

Exactly. Just test it and see. What works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa. Context matters.

I believe in designing in custom popups for websites. This helps in two directions:
    1. Gives your popup a unique design, different from others.
    2. Customized targeting - The popup you design should reflect the main theme of your website.
