Instagram offers two interesting ways to hack growth. First, for a product or service that is not tied to the Instagram API directly, there are a number of growth hacks to spur brand engagement and drive prospective customers down the conversion funnel. Second, Instagram has a powerful API for developers to build mobile apps on top of the social platform. And as a result, there are a number of ways to included built-in growth automation into your app. Starting with the onboarding flow and expanding into growth features that can be anchored into "light bulb" user interaction with your mobile experience. Among the many hacks you might have seen out there, be it in a B2C or B2B context, which ones have been the simplest yet most powerful in your opinion?

    I went through a lot of case studies some time ago and compiled them into a post - mainly on growth hacking to spur engagement.

    Summary of tactics found in the case studies:

    1. Use 7 hashtags
    2. Strategic basic moves: Comment, Like, Post (AT THE RIGHT TIME), use a collage picture.
    3. Use less filters.
    4. Create a contest
    5. Get the science of colors right
    6. Find out who follows your competitors, interact with them
    7. Influencer marketing can drive plenty of sales.
    8. Allow users to buy from you by just making comments
    9. Spent $57k and get a backlash from your fans

      Hi James @jsmarketing - Thanks for sharing this wealth of #ig knowledge!

      It's a solid piece of information. The "7 hashtag" hack stood out for me. Very interesting and makes a lot of sense to find help find the border between the growth, added-value world, and the spammy side which we all want to ward off.

      Now, this relates to one aspect of Instagram growth. I am having a hard time finding expert information on the Instagram API side of growth (although some apps that are mentioned in you paper clearly leverage the Instagram API to spur growth).

      Any other thoughts from the GH community would be much appreciated in that sense.

    Here are a few hacks I've noticed some brands use to build engagement:

    - including a CTA
    - posting timely content
    - run contests and giveaways
    - ask an influencer to basically take over your account for a day
    - linking your feed to Facebook and Twitter

    A quick Instagram hack:
    Find the best time to post on Instagram (time and day) for your line of business.
    Each industry would have a different time of the day and day of the week which is best for them to post - a time where their followers (both potential and current) are most active.
