I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to decide on whether to try one of the affiliate programs for my WordPress based SaaS. I have over 25K users with a decent fraction that are paid. I'm looking for a program with an existing affiliate marketer pool to reach out to. Every article I read however is extremely vague and/or speaks negatively about programs like Shareasale. Anyone in the SaaS realm have any real success with Shareasale, Clickbank, or any other program that comes with affiliate marketers to recruit? I'd love any WordPress specific advice as well. Links to helpful (honest) articles would help!

A great example of a successful Affiliate program comes from Kinsta: https://kinsta.com/affiliates/. Why is it so good? Because a) it's set up professionally and b) it has a strong incentive for affiliates: revenue share.
The thing with affiliate programs is that you either do it right or not at all. Too many companies just set up a landing page and that's it. However, it's actually almost a full-time job to do.
Here are critical questions you need to answer when you decide to start an affiliate program:
    1. What's the incentive for affiliates to participate in my program? Why should they?
    2. How can they (and I) monitor how much they made in my program?
    3. What am I sacrificing for the affiliate program (you have limited resources, there's always opportunity cost)?

    Good luck, mate!

    Hey there,

    Great question.

If you are starting out, I'd stick away from networks (CJ.com, shareasale, etc.); there very cost prohibitive for someone starting an affiliate program. Although there are a lot of affiliates who have Publisher accounts on these networks, the networks themselves do not (I repeat, do not) help you or give you good access to finding affiliates (had to emphasize because a lot of assumptions around that).

Overall, recruiting & finding affiliates is hard work. A few articles that I wrote that might helpful though in putting focus on it:

    - How to find affiliates to promote your SaaS company: https://upfoundry.com/resources/how-to-find-affiliates-to-promote-your-saas-company/
-How to Pitch SaaS Affiliates: https://upfoundry.com/resources/how-to-pitch-and-recruit-saas-affiliates/

I also be writing about best software to manage SaaS based affiliate program - so check back. I hope this helps!

Hi Levy! Your question made me think of this podcast featuring ConvertKit's Affiliate Manager - she works with over 10,000 affiliates and speaks to the immense value of the program. While I don't think she mentions the program she uses to manage them, she does provide some detailed insight on how she's seen crazy success from the program as a SaaS company. Here'e the episode link if you're interested: https://hub.uberflip.com/content-marketing-podcast/how-to-build-a-thriving-and-profitable-affiliate-program Best of luck!

I wrote this a while ago in response to many questions I was getting about affiliate programs and how to get started.

It may have some useful nuggets for you.

Also has a huge list of the top networks if you're considering joining one.

If you want to do it yourself there are some links to tools like Ambassador for running your own in-house program.

    Hope this helps.
