I'm setting up a simple non-wordpress landing page for a friend who knows nothing about web development.

Is there an A/B testing tool which only needs coding when I set it up, and has a super-simple surface where my non-techie friend can create basic A/B tests and see the results?

Thanks guys!

    Disclaimer: I work for Optimizely.

Optimizely has several features that work well for non-technical people. We have a WYSIWYG visual editor which allows the user to load a page on their website by entering a URL and click on elements to change them, drag and drop, easily upload new photos, etc. It's actually easier to use than a lot of CMS's out there and for that reason a number of our customers use it as pseudo CMS.

Another huge benefit to Optimizely is that it has a next generation statistical engine that requires 0 knowledge of statistics. This is not present in any other platform. Optimizely users no longer have to think about calculating sample size, determining and minimum detectable effect, or other tasks associated with traditional frequentist statistics. The user can trust the results to always be valid no matter the sample size. IMO this is a huge differentiator from other product because statistics is actually harder to understand than web development.

In addition to our next generation stats engine we will also soon roll out auto allocation (bandits) which automatically determines which of your variations is the better performer and allocates more traffic to it. With stats engine and auto allocation you can start your experiment and forget about it completely. Optimizely essentially deploys the winner for you without the user needing to do anything.

Lastly, Optimizely is free for websites that have less than 50,000 unique visitors: https://www.optimizely.com/pricing

    Good luck!

I second Optimizely as must-use if you're looking to add A/B testing to an existing site.

        Third. --- But be careful.

1 - Stats needs large numbers to work well.
2 - A > B or B > A is cheaper to calculate than answering the question "by how much?".
3 - Big changes > Smaller ones. The wider gap between the AB test, the faster you can calc.
4 - New site? A|B test the traffic driver. Testing Ads > Testing Lander > Testing Checkout.

Big fan of Optimizely here, but I've always found its value prop for non-technical individuals to be a bit overly optimistic. IMO, if you want to run meaningful tests, you need to have a cursory understanding of JS.

The WYSIWG editor is nice, but it writes verbose code which affects site performance. I love using it, but I've always had to go in and clean up the code it writes. (eg. move an element left, then back. it writes two lines of js)

and for multi-page tests, i see no way around not knowing JS. unless you have a dedicated dev providing support on testing. (oh how great that would be! ;-)

that all said -- optimizely is awesome. and their support is fantastic :)

Yup. I love Optimizely, but I've seen plenty of people destroy pages because they try to rearrange the DOM way too much.

With that being said, it's the closest A/B solution to "no technical skills required."

Yup. You can pretty much only use the visual editor for copy testing. For all else you should be using code editor, or you're doing it wrong.

Wow... just wow. If anyone believes that he deserves to pay the money for WYSIWYG editor and a redirect script, because pretty much all of the A/B testing SaaS out there is just that.

    Hi Adam,

I've tried Optimizely, Visual Website Optimizer, Unbounce, Instapage and quite a few more.

For non-techies that have a big budget, Optimizely is your friend.

For non-techies without a big budget, Visual Website Optimizer works wonders.

For non-techies with a need for landing pages as well as A/B testing, Instapage is great but if you need heavy customization Unbounce is better.

      Still no edit on GH.

I noticed Optimizely finally changed their pricing, I would still recommend Visual Website Optimizer (VWO) over Optimizely because their customer service has been top notch since the days I worked for companies that couldn't afford Optimizely. You will have to pay off the bat but I'd say take your landing page, duplicate it and run VWO and Optimizely on trial to see which works best for you.

Thanks for recommending VWO, Jamil. I'd add that one of that VWO also has benefit of having heatmaps integrated into the product for no additional cost. It's one of the most loved features by our users, so thought should mention it here.

Yeah, Unbounce is my choice here. It's as simple as putting a powerpoint presentation to use, and you have the ability to split test. As a non-coder guy, with an appreciation and eye for good design, Unbounce gives me what I need to make something that looks good, and can be tested.

I'd recommend Unbounce as well. We've ran few campaigns with them and landing pages are super easy to set up and customize. It might not be the most powerful tool for split testing but it's a great all-included landing page solution. Plus they have a really good support team.

Unbouncer here, and appreciate the Unbounce love! You're right, we definitely focus on being an all-around landing page solution so marketers can easily set up pages for their marketing campaigns, no coding skills required. Intuitiveness and ease of use is key but that said, we try to balance between efficiency and power. You can totally set up a landing page that works for web and mobile in a few minutes but if you want to spend a bit more time, there's a lot of room for customization and playing with features (like script manager for instance—details if you're interested: http://inside.unbounce.com/team/script-manager/). Of course, A/B testing is necessary to see what's actually working in your landing pages (kind of important!) so you're able to set up champion pages and test different variants against it. I could go on, but I'll spare you guys from a ramble. :) @adamszabobiz happy to answer any questions you have about Unbounce or put you in touch with one of our customer success members to give the full rundown. In the meantime, here are some A/B testing posts you or your friend may find useful: http://unbounce.com/a-b-testing/. All the best in your search!

Disclaimer: I work for a new startup, Experiment Engine.

We provide a platform similar to these other tools - minimal coding needed. Typically, we also provide optional account services that can help with the technical side. It can be integrated with Optimizely (others coming soon) if you're already on it.

But our main offer is really the access to crowdsourced ideas from optimization experts. So if you or your team is experiencing ideation fatigue or believe to have reached a CRO maximum, Experiment Engine can help keep you testing and optimizing. After all, the continuous testing of guided variations is the true optimization aspect.

So our goal is to make A/B testing even more accessible by providing both the platform (that requires minimal resources) and the idea generation.

Would love to hear what you guys think! Do you prioritize the quality of ideas just as much as technical ability within your own A/B testing process?

As long as they are doing one page tests I think the three recommendations would be:
    - Convert http://www.convert.com (I work there)
    - VWO http://www.vwo.com
    - Optimizely http://www.optimizely.com

But with all three you can still break things in any page. A simple example would be things that have some sort of Javascript attached and he will play around in those areas.

Generally easy to fix with an email (if you get support) or just being careful in those areas (like forms, product pages... add to cart, checkouts) etc.

    Happy testing !

Yes, there a lot of different tools that had been mentioned above.
But we also have really amazing service for non-techies - Changeagain.me
It's the eaisiest tool for A/B testing with automatic and full Google Analytics integration. So if you use GA every day for analyzing your website, it would be the best choice for you.
Also we have easy-to-use visual editor (WYSISYG) and nice pricing model where you pay only for amount of experiments. Not for traffic.

I've tried VWO, optimizely, marketizator, convert and quite a few more ,however, at the end of the day I always come back to google's content experiment.
there are just too many things that can go wrong with those tools:browsers incompatibility, terrible load time, dis-functioning links etc'...

      Hello, Walidaf.
Yes, it's very hard to find service for A/B testing that will not have any bugs...It's reality and nothing is completely perferct.
Nonetheless I think that it would be interesting for you to try out our service Changeagain.me because in our tool we are using Google Content Experiment API, so it's fully integrated with Google Analytics and works ideally for those, who prefer Google Analytics services.

You can try out Changeagain.me (I'm CEO of the service) . It's very easy-to-use A/B testing tool for non-techies. You can create A/B tests within 5 minutes due to visual editor.

The main differentiators from other tools are:

    - Full and automatic Google Analytics integration. You just sing up to the service via Gmail account with websites linked to Google Analytics and in a few seconds we integrate our service with all properties, views and goals. After that you are suggested to create variation in visual editor and choose the goal from GA or create new goal in our service. Also this integration allows you to make deep analysis of A/B test results (segmentation, impact on all goals in the funnel). So if you are using GA all the time, it would be more convenient for you to create A/B tests in Changeagain

    - Completely new pricing model for A/B testing tool - Pay per experiment, not impressions. It starts from 50 $/month for 4 experiments/month. And cost of the tool doesn't depend on website traffic. So for the projects with high-volume traffic it's cost-effective.

Also it has very intuitive interface without any unnecessary functions.

(Disclaimer: I'm the founder of 3 Minute Optimizer) I'd recommend my own 3 Minute Optimizer. Because we created 3 Minute Optimizer specifically for non-techie small business owners. What makes us different is that you can set up an A/B test super fast.

There are basically 3 fields to fill out: Your control page, variation page, and thank you page. And your test is ready to run.

Shameless plug. But I'm passionate about A/B testing and the tool we created.

    Hope this helps.

Hey, if you already understood that CRO doesn't actually mean only AB testing, please consider the awarded tool we are crafting, Marketizator.
Besides the visual editor for AB testing, it allows you to launch behaviour insight surveys + real time web personalization. Besides that is free for up to 10k visitors/month ;)
