Are there any well known businesses that have primarily been built via Pinterest?
I know of several businesses built via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but can't think of a case study of a business built via the Pinterest platform.
Must still be the case but I remember 2-3 years back, quite a few founders at startup conferences were saying they were getting the most referral steam from pinterest. Check this article for reference, I'd love to have an updated trend since I believe this is key depending on the vertical you look to grow: http://mashable.com/2013/10/15/pinterest-referral-traffic/#5sGFxYRUoaqo
I've definitely heard that from a lot of people too, but don't know any businesses off the top of my head that were built via Pinterest.
Pinterest features dozens of case studies on their Pinterest for Business site (https://business.pinterest.com). Most of them appear to be already established brands using Pinterest as a new channel for driving traffic and revenue with Buyable Pins.
One case study is about a small business called Artifact Uprising. After one of their Pins took off, the company went from home-based startup to multi-million dollar company seeing triple digit growth in under 18 months.
No, because for the longest time they did not have an open API - They were some startups (like mine) who did our hardest, but Pinterest was never a good ecosystem partner. My team tried to boost their ecommerce capabilities very early on, and got a bit of VC money, but biz dev was never interested in talking to us, Investors barely knew what Pinterest was. and the very few that did know either they invested in Pinterest or were waiting for them to declare their intentions ( Read http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/25/shopinterest-e-commerce-pinterest-backing-500-startups_n_1913015.html)
We started in late 2010, launched in 2011, folded in 2014 and during all this time no API was available. I believe one of the reasons for their 'stunted' growth was the lack of an ecosystem that would create more solutions. (e.g. like early Twitter and Facebook)
Later on they went and sue a few startups arguing copyright over the word 'Pin' - a few survive out there, basically running influencer campaigns.
