I am using bit.ly's as part of an SMS campaign through my mobile app and am seeing a massive discrepancy between bit.ly analytics and Appsflyer (number like 200 clicks vs 2 clicks). Anybody have experience or insights about why this is happening?

There is nothing more nerve-wracking than one platform saying you are killing it and another saying you're going nowhere. In my experience this sort of discrepancy can happen for the following reasons:

    1. Tracking/trigger is not setup correctly: one of my clients used to have their pixel fire when a URL was loaded; unfortunately, they used to use an iFrame within a page that was not tracking conversions. We needed to switch the trigger from a URL view to a button click, which helped create some consistency between platforms.
    2. There is no cross-platform/device attribution: There is a chance that bitly might be counting double the amount of clicks if it is occurring on two devices owned by the same person. For example, Johnny uses his iPhone and clicks on your link on the subway, but then clicks on the link again on his iPad.
    3. Shortened link isn't be tracked: Small chance that when the link is clicked it loses any UTM parameters that your tracking software is looking for.

I would recommend trying an SMS campaign with a non-bitly link to see if you are getting the same issues with Appsflyer. If that solves the issue then you know the problem is with Appsflyer recording bitly links. If that doesn't solve the problem then the tracking is probably not setup correctly.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks! We tried running the SMS campaign with Google's shortener and there is a much smaller discrepancy so the problem seems to be on Bitly's end.

Hm! It's very interesting, because I'm also using Bit.ly for tracking CTR from SMS, but had pretty strange results.
I need to try Google's shortener)

I've switched over to Goo.gl and it seems to be more accurate!

After your previous reply I also switched to Goo.gl for some SMS and I think that it works very well.
But it's bad that they don't have any interface, titles for links and so on....
It's harder to work in their interface if you have a lot of links. There would be complete chaos...

But anyway, thanks a lot for your good advice!)
