Dave McClure’s pirate metrics are an invaluable model for analyzing SasS metrics, but little has been written about them. Each of the metrics are not all immediately valuable and actionable as you first start building a product, but one of the ones I think that is valuable (and critical to start measuring) from the very beginning is an activation event.

    I'm always surprised by how few people have an activation event, and how much better they'd be off if they had one.

    At Sidekick, do you guys have "first tracked email sent" as your activation event?

      Thanks Ryan.

      For Sidekick, we use the first notification that someone receives as our activation event. We've done more data analysis into how we might redefine it, but for now, that's our activation metric.

        Ah I see, does that exclude the notification they receive during the onboarding? e.g. the one they send to a hubspot email address (which is excellent btw)
