Launching a new product can be daunting because you have to simultaneously juggle multiple product, customer, and market risks. In fielding some of these tradeoffs with the launch his own SaaS product the author devised the following 10x launch plan. The 10x launch uses staged rollouts with a logarithmic step function (10x) that affords the right prioritization of risk at each stage.

I think this article outlines a great way to maximize learning by utilizing the right early users - in terms of quality & quantity - prior to product market fit.

it also maps very well to Andrew Chen's article on designing your community: http://www.growthhackers.com/dont-just-design-your-product-design-your-community-too/

Thanks for sharing this, Anuj. This is super helpful and I've sent this out to some founders I talk to. It's hard for folks to quantify the process of early customer development and "when to do what."

Exactly David - this is the first time I saw the process laid out systematically with the reasoning for why you do what you do at any given point.
Glad you found it useful :)
