Author was doing research on Google Trends and noticed something interesting. The phrase “social media marketing” grew tremendously from 2009 to 2011 and has since leveled off, without future growth in sight. Meanwhile, the phrase “content marketing” has really picked up in the last year and is on a significant upwards trajectory. He realized that these simple graphs told a larger story about today’s marketing landscape.  Read more

I feel like "social media marketing" and content marketing goes hand in hand, social media - especially Twitter can be a great distribution channel for your content. I've personally seen the power of social media when it comes to driving traffic and awareness. Maybe retire the term but there is still so much value there, just my opinion.

I try to explain that without content, you have no fuel for your social media channels. So without a full content marketing effort, social media "marketing" will suffer.

I've seen success with social media marketing without content.

I'm certainly not saying it can't be done. There are plenty of ways to leverage social media without it, but it certainly is a different approach. I think having a full content plan in place makes it easier with a better chance of attracting and converting customers.

Interesting research. I love Google trends for this type of stuff and agree that content marketing is better than Social Media Marketing. I also compared it to Inbound Marketing. Content marketing seemed to still be quite a bit bigger the inbound marketing http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=content%20marketing%2C%20inbound%20marketing&cmpt=q

Sean, I am sure the trend will change in next 18 months as people will stop using SEO (which is 96X more in Google Trends as compared to inbound marketing) and start using Inbound Marketing more.

Also since Content Marketing and Inbound Marketing are both part of the same picture, Most of the Inbound Marketing guys uses Content Marketing term very generously, in fact the most popular post on our inbound marketing blog which later I converted into PPT (which made it to slideshare homepage too) was - 25 Ways to do Content Marketing http://www.slideshare.net/inBoundio/25-ways-to-do-content-marketing :)

I think of this as a natural evolution:
    1) Social Media Marketing
    Key lesson: power of one-to-one
    2) Content Marketing <-- where we are at now
    Key lesson: give to receive
    3) Tribal marketing
Key lesson: power of one-to-many, providing value to tribes of connected buyers with lots in common

I really don't like the term social media marketing because people think anyone can do it with skill. Also many interns start out at this role and the pay scale has drastically in some cases decreased. I prefer to use the terms digital marketing and really just integrated marketing since that is what it is. It is to compliment all forms of marketing and requires great writers, graphics, and strategy.

I believe they go hand in hand. Content marketing is eating right and clean. Social media is working out/exercising. If you want to be fit and toned, you need both!

Content Marketing is the superset of Social Media Marketing and has a very broad meaning and may confuse layperson. For example, as an Inbound Marketing service provider, if someone ask me about Content Marketing, I do have to explain parts of Content Marketing of which Social Media Marketing will be one.

I talked about the obsolete term "social media marketing" years ago against that workers that consider social media *only* as a channel or to use this like a buzzword. Social media is the distribution (and growth help this), content and relationship are the key.

Infact, the next step will be "H2H", human to uman marketing. But, wait: who does it already? The shop around corner :)
