🌍 When you're dealing with websites available in multiple languages, there's no escaping from hreflang.

Hreflang looks straight forward, but correctly implementing it is no small feat which SEO specialists Aleyda Solis, Jenny Halasz, Kevin Indig and David Iwanow confirm.

In this article we cover:

  • What the hreflang attribute is and why you should care about it.
  • What search engines support the hreflang attribute.
  • How to implement the hreflang attribute.
  • What best practices to adhere when implementing it.

What are your experiences with hreflang? What works well for you to get search engines to finally get what target audience you're aiming for?

Thanks for the guide. Pretty insightful, as usual.
    Still got one question though

Should I use hreflang for a local business? If I operate in a single US city, should I set hreflang to en-us or I shouldn't bother?

Thanks Igor, glad to hear we're keeping up the quality :)

As for your question, that's a common one and the answer is: no. If your website's available in one language and you only have one target audience, search engines generally pick up on your intended audience well and there's no need to give them additional pointers. If you're dealing with multiple languages, then you should definitely take a look at hreflang!

I think this must be one of the most confused issued in SEO. I've seen John Mueller RT'ing Aleyda's diagram on it saying something along the lines of "this is the best and most simple explanation for it" haha. So the fact you've got her first up in the article shows you've sourced the right authorities!

Currently working on a site with some issues around this, in particular, the hreflang="x-default" part. This has been super helpful. Great actionable insights. Thanks
