User generated content can be an absolute goldmine. Looks like it really paid off you guys! It won't always be the highest quality content unless you have some kind of manual review process, and the keywords it will rank for aren't necessarily going to be too relevant for your business, but it can be a great means of driving external links.

Yeah, it has to be mentioned that you might not correlate with an increase in revenue on the short term.

But for a SaaS business it means you are doing outreach and educating people regarding how your platform works. I believe, on the long term, the user base will start to grow exponentially.

If you look at Trello you will see that ( I'm guessing not knowing of the implications ) they created a continuously growing outreach program with their public dashboards . Everyone from cooks to engineers were creating public dashboards and sharing them on blog posts, of how they arrange their tasks and priorities, creating templates and so on.

Excellent Article. Loved reading it. Love to know how do you manage to do proper interlinking between pages for such when the number of content grows. Still doing it manually or have some kind of tools?

Thank you! Interlinking is done automatically through an algorithm that clusters topics together. So we end up displaying relevant content to the user and it also pleases Google.

As for the research, it's 50%-50%. I still use Screamingfrog and Sitebulb for bulk crawling, but some of the research just means looking at what you have to work with and going through examples manually.

Impressive numbers but why did you have a "manual action" in the first place though?

The public mind maps can be embedded, and of course we had a cheeky "Powerd by MindMeister" link ( it was not nofollow ) which resulted in hundreds of thousands of backlinks towards the homepage.

Google decided it was too greedy and that those widget links are spammy ( and they were right ). But in all honesty I see many cases of this kind of spammy link building in the wild and nothing happens. I really don't know how they decide who gets manual penalties and who is spared.

Even though these links had just branded anchor text and had nofollow added they penalized you? Google really sucks.

There is nothing wrong about adding a source link from embedded content. You just need to allow people to opt out or make it optional.
