I saw some discussion about how to get your first 1,000 users.

Here's how we at iDoneThis got our first 5,000 users -- by going to communities that had the users we wanted, joining and participating in those communities, and seeing if they were interested in our tailored narrative.

I really liked to see that you found success telling people about your product! Too often you'll share your baby and it won't get any traction. It's always reassuring to see it work.

Good luck with this custom narrative on GH ;)

"Throughout this process I began to notice just how deeply enmeshed Hacker News is in the startup and tech media network." - well ain't that the truth. That's why building relationships with people in these networks and with journalists early on is so essential. Your work was an interesting cross between community-building, relationship-nurturing, and traditional PR.

Awesome breakdown, Walter! Proves it's not just luck - framing the narrative in the right way can get around traditional barriers in place that prevent good PR.
