Once upon a time, blog commenting was actually an effective link-building strategy (here’s Loren Baker recommending it back in 2007). But that really was “once upon a time” (at least, in internet terms…).

Today, excessive blog commenting executed purely to gain links is officially frowned upon. According to Matt Cutts:

What’s more, even if manipulative blog commenting doesn’t land you a very lovely penalty, thanks to the “nofollow” attribute that’s commonly used today, any value you gain in terms of link equity is pretty much negligible anyway.

But, that doesn’t mean that blog commenting can’t be used as alegitimate mechanism for marketing your company and generating leads.

My content distribution game is pretty tight but I'm always on the lookout for new techniques. Influencer marketing (both engaging with and positioning as one) is something I'm very interested in too. Hope that helps :).

Despite its controversy, I think Alexa rank is still the #1 decisive factor in determining the value of a blog or website.

I noticed that you made reference to few other metrics, but I think it's worth mentioning Alexa rank.

Nice read. It just goes to show that blog commenting is the most overrated and also the most underrated (insert strategy here).

Awesome article! Thanks for sharing it Nichole. Indeed blog commenting can work like charm. Neil Patel has also written a post about it: https://www.quicksprout.com/2014/11/10/how-i-generated-25000-by-leaving-249-comments/

Every time I broke into a new industry, the first thing I did was identify the major players/analysts, and subscribe to their blog (with the plan to comment whenever I could add value).

Hell, even Ferriss responds to people in the comments section - it's rare for an author to not read the comments in their own posts.

That's a great approach. I try to do the same thing. To make a name for yourself it's very important to connect with the influencers in the space.

    Great post Sujan.

As I mentioned in your comments I haven't been one to include links inside my comments as I don't typically approve comments with links for my own blog, but I could see if it is a valuable comment it being approved.

I do typically comment, share on Twitter and add the author if it's an influencer I want to connect with to a Twitter list; but that's probably not enough. Appreciate the data you shared and the compelling reason to test this strategy. Great post ~ Mike

Love the article. Do you think that you got so high ROI because of the product you were providing? I guess if you still add value and then add link to your blog / website, it wouldn't convert that well.
    Thoughts?

Great share. But I doubt is this going to workout for a consulting/service business.
