I'd love to see the Twitter handle of contributors, so I could follow them if I thought it worthwhile. Getting it through the LI link is a bit tedious, and sometimes even impossible.

      Seconded.
However I'd actually go further and say that contributors profiles should have the ability to add in social profiles from multiple networks if they want because many people are (as or more) active on more than one network.

So beyond LI & Twitter, also have the ability to specify FB/G+/Instagram/Pinterest + a field for any website (could be main product or service site/landing page/blog etc)

"Pitch My Plan": a shark-tank/dragon's den approach to a proposed or WIP Growth hacking plan.

A lot of people are asking for advice/recommendations (I'm about to start doing the same) and getting really good answers. Clearly, they're asking because they're midway through planning or collecting ideas for a particular project.

Could we focus that ad-hoc process here in the community to create a Growth Hacking version of a startup clinic?

Once a week, a rough or outline of a Growth Hacking plan is chosen to go up for review and commentary by the community. The submitter gets a ton of focussed, specific feedback and the community gets to see inside the development of some real-world plans.

The 'entry cost' for getting all this free advice is that the submitter has to commit to report back with some topline results/learnings.

    Alert notifications when:
    a) A specific user post an article or comments on an an article (especially when you have no connection with that article)
    b) Articles are posted in a specific category
    c) Articles/comments with keywords of interest are posted

In essence these would be the equivalent of following people/content of interest.

Add collapsible/expandible "Article Summary" section directly under the post link so we don't have to click through to the discussion page just to see the summary (or whether a summary even exists).

I'd like to add an important feature request because, as a GrowthHackers Intern, I see this abused all the time.

It would be nice to have a checkbox on the submission screen that says: "This content has been written by me or someone in my company."

The reason for this is because I continually see content being posted by the original author that adds very little value. Although sometimes the content is a great submission, there are other times when I review a member's profile and see that s/he only posts her/his own content. It's frustrating and it would be nice to avoid situations of thin or valueless content.

By adding this feature, it will allow us to monitor the submissions and flag abuse.

    Just a thought.

    • HV

      hristo vassilev

Absolutely agree. Easy change would also to set the links to 'nofollow' to avoid people posting content simply for the link value.

Not a feature suggestion as much as a minor bug report. Any chance you could fix the "More posts" link disappearing on results page 6 and beyond? I'll sometimes be off the forums for a while and want to catch up; however, when I try to read past page 6 in any of the categories, the link disappears and I have to manually change the URL.

Funny, I sent a note to Dylan this morning saying that comment upvoting should be our next project. He's releasing some cool profile stuff this week.

  • A.

    Also .

Please add an option for monitoring specific threads.

Basically instead of this - "Email me when someone comments on a post that I've commented on." - have a per-post flag that tag post as "monitored". Set the flag Off by default. Turn it On automatically if I comment on the post *and*, most importantly, let me toggle this flag manually as I wish.

This would allow for two things. 1) To monitor posts without participating 2) Stop monitoring posts that I commented on if I become disinterested in them.

    Thanks

    • A.

      Also .

Another one - please make First and Last name and Short bio editable in the Profile section. I must not be the only one careful with disclosing personal information when signing up for yet another Internet forum, so it's essential to allow changing one's information after the registration.

It was just too difficult for me to see all the suggestions that have been made so far, so I quickly pasted them into a Google Doc, including by whom and their status.

This is not intended to be a replacement for the feature suggestions/upvoting in the comment section - just a summary view.

GH team - hope you don't mind I did this.
if it's a problem, will take it down.

[UPDATE 12/9/13]: Moved Google Spreadsheet link to Post Summary section at top of page.

      Dylan La Com

This is great Anuj - we had been meaning to create something just like this, and you beat us to it :)

I've added the link to the post summary up top.

Also, I wanted to mention, I know everyone in this thread is receiving email updates whenever a new comment is added here (unless you've disabled this feature in your account settings). Until we can offer a follow/subscribe option on a post-by-post basis, this feature is sort of all-or-nothing.

If these updates have gotten annoying, and in general the people in this thread no longer want to receive email updates on this post, I can disable comments for this post, and have all future comments/ideas be added to the post summary, which does not trigger an email.

Otherwise, if the email updates do not bother, I'll keep this thread moving along as is :)

Thanks Dylan - and actually you can delete my prior comment. I mistakenly added it here (which quite honestly is a very random location for it) when I should've put it in the summary section to begin with.
I think having it in 2 places might be confusing.

        Regarding disabling comments:
My opinion is to not do that since feature suggestions lead to further discussions & upvoting which are very important & would not be possible to do within the framework of the spreadsheet.
I simply intended it to be a summary view and not a replacement for the current suggestion/discussion/upvoting mechanism.

I just can't believe a web named growthhackers does not have Facebook/G+/Twitter login implemented. Today I had to spend some time looking for my username, asking for a password reset, then going back to my inbox and forth to this webpage... c'mon guys that is so from the past!

You're more than welcome Dylan, if I had to choose a social network to begin with I'd rather think in G+ or Facebook before Twitter since social login through Twitter API does not return email and you have to ask the user to introduce it manually anyway.
On the other hand there are some people out there surprisingly claiming this method to be not worth it, would be great if you could write a similar post to this http://blog.mailchimp.com/social-login-buttons-arent-worth-it/ afterwards in order to know whether finally it was worth it or not!

Maybe I'm missing it, but I don't see a way to get the top X daily trending articles via email or RSS.

    • SE

      Sean Ellis

Thanks for the suggestion Andrei. Our goal is to encourage discussion about the articles, so I'm not sure an RSS feed will make sense. But I definitely see us doing a weekly or monthly email. I would love to hear other people's thoughts on an RSS feed (including people on my team).

      • MB

        Morgan Brown

I think instead of RSS we have a top article of the day. Similar to what Quora does. They use your behavior and the subjects you follow to send a highly relevant recommended article/thread that is almost always perfectly suited for you.

I don't think we should send dumb email to everyone, but while we get an email system up and running, I do think a daily top articles and weekly top article newsletter option would be great.

We could add it to the profile page to opt-in.

Additional elements that I'd like to see:

        - Karma/cred points for submissions/comments
        - A cleaner way to do Ask GH: type discussion posts
        - Auto-populate post titles when the URL is submitted
        - Twitter/FB/GitHub login options
        - Share on GH bookmarklet for submitting content
        - Duplicate content detection, multiple-submitted links get rolled up as votes for the original item
        - Comment voting—it'd be great if people could vote up the top comments a la HN

        • AA

          Anuj Adhiya

@morgan I think duplicate detection really needs to get looked at, in the manner you've specified since GH has achieved some sort of critical mass now.

        Hi Sean,

I totally agree: encourage discussions is key.

        I discovered GrowthHackers via Twitter.

In 5 sec: checked it. Found it the idea awesome.

The FIRST this I wanted to do after that, was adding a RSS feed to my feedly => all the content I have/want to read in one place. So convenient.

Convenience makes me more inclined to come here and discuss when I find something interesting.

      • AD

        Alex Davis

I'll have to agree with the adding of an RSS feed. I love this site but rarely take the time to come and browse it. It's not "sticky" enough.

If there was an RSS feed, I would being seeing content daily in my news aggregator and would more likely be a return visitor, if not a daily visitor.

My suggestion to encourage discussion, include an automatic call to action at the end of every article to go to GrowthHacker.com to discuss and comment. This way the RSS will drive traffic rather than diminish it. (think of the famous Hotmail growth hack)

Also, the daily, weekly and/or monthly email with trending articles seems like a no brainer. That'll surely keep driving us back to the site. ;)

I agree with François, +1 for a RSS feed. Even though you guys want the discussion to happen inside GH, people should have the choice to enjoy your content how they please.

You will have higher retention in the long run (I would assume the GH crowd is RSS-friendly), and your hardcore readers will know they have a place to exchange ideas, if in the mood.

This is the model Hacker News follows, btw.

Would it be possible get category sorting to work when I have filtered by user?

Whenever I read an article I really like, I tend to want to see what else they've submitted (which I can do) in that category as well (which I can't easily do).

So as a practical example: If I click on the hyperlink for Sean's name (next to the article name), I can see all articles submitted by him like this:
    http://www.growthhackers.com/author/sean/
If I then try and sort by article category, this does not work.
In fact no matter what article category I pick, I see this as the result:

Expand search to include any keyword(s) onsite - not just keywords within post titles.
There is so much good discussion on GH that some of it isnt easily findable after x period of time.
Having search look for specific keywords will be instrumental in resurfacing content + the value added by the community.

  • RE

    Rachel Ergo

Not sure if we covered this directly yet...on the start a discussion page for the articles, can we pull in the first few sentences or meta description of the article so when we share the GH link on social, visitors don't get confused when they land on a blank page?

As is, the discussion page is the only place I've found to be able to link the article's connection to GH. When someone clicks on a link I share, it's not very obvious that they have to click on the article title to see the original article.

      Thanks Rachel!

In the next couple weeks we will be releasing something like a wiki section for each post. It will be an optional field on submission, and also editable by the community. We think it will serve well as a way to summarize the content of the articles, and provide viewers of the discussion page some info from the article if they have not read it.

How about notifications to content submitters when someone upvotes a link they posted?
The notification would contain the name of the upvoter (linked to their GH public profile) and a link to the article that you submitted that was upvoted.

I'd imagine that would only fuel the amount of social networking that has already been enabled via public profiles.

Thanks Chris - you're right, volume of comments is down a bit so far this week from last, though last week had a 183% increase in comments from the previous week. A couple things I noticed from last week that may have contributed to the increase in comments were some relevant media coverage by larger publications. Ask GH posts generally seem to have the highest discussion rate, though I haven't looked at the specific numbers yet.

How about the ability to add posts to up to 3 categories (mandatory to pick 1, optional to add more)?

As an example, I posted this earlier: http://www.growthhackers.com/why-content-marketing-fails-3-tools-to-improve-content-driven-conversions - and it could easily belong to Content Marketing, Analytics or Tools.

i think everyone's (submitters & readers) interpretation of any given category may vary.
Because of this, people looking to find posts by filtering on category may miss out on relevant articles.
Having multiple categories will alleviate this to a reasonable extent.

Surface content in a super-mobile consumable way (see: jelly, tinder): design and speed

Give us a way to tweet specific responses that includes the contributor's username and @GrowthHacker and social sharing on each page.

Add images the way you are doing them on Twitter so that we can share individual pages visually on Facebook, Pinterest, and LinkedIn - possibly elsewhere.

If you have images on the page some will go out of their way to add them manually, but of course automating the process as much as possible will increase sharing.

Each person's profile should include links to their Twitter, Facebook (personal and fan), LinkedIn (personal and business), Pinterest, and Google Plus (personal and business).

I have a suggestion. Maybe you guys could get your house in better order. I joined this site due to the amazing content, yet, I'm appalled by your system. Prior to joining, there was NO mention of posts having to be manually reviewed before they are uploaded. While I can kinda, sorta understand this, even more ridiculous is...

When I see my posts aren't showing up, there is NO explanation, no reason, or, at the least, a kind email giving me a heads up...nothing. Further...

There is absolutely NO clear person to contact that could address these issues. Too many "no's", for my taste. To be clear...

Both of my posts were not spammy, and I don't think any site would have an issue with them.

Great content, but I cannot see your site surviving long term without these serious issue being remedied ;)

Disclaimer: I'm not part of the GH team

I've never noticed anything like that. My posts always got published straight away without any validation process.

If your post were removed, I guess that they were either spammy or didn't respect the guidelines of the website.

I'm sure that if you send valuable content relating to Growth Hacking, your post will receive the attention they deserved.

As for the survival of the website, it seems like it's already on a good path.

    1. Growth Hacker community should be able to define what should go in Trending and Must Reads Buckets.. I am not sure what is the current process.

    2. Growth Hackers can also have Clarity kind of feature where few community members can be reached based on their given expertise.

    3. Growthhackers meetup will be a big success in San Francisco. Hope to have the same.

Team is doing a fantastic job! Great work.

    1. Open free UserVoice account - much easier to see what was suggested and not post duplicates.

    2. Talk to UserVoice Growth person - they might give you paid features free to sponsor you. "Growth Hacking" assumes that hacking-ability from you :)

    3. Let me edit my comment for 5 min after posting and make sure email notifications will not be posted to others before 5 min will expire.

Please do something with Post Editor - It took me 3 attempts of save changes to get the proper formatting.

HTML formatting doesn't work properly and even making text bold doesn't distinguish it from normal text much.

And tried embedding tweet post on a question it gave me such a terrible formatting result that I needed to replace that with plain text.

Email Comunication - Your sending emails suggesting articles that I already read so it doesn't motivate me to visit the webpage hence defeating the entire purpose of the email.

Feature: Send email suggesting articles that I have not read.

Nice to have: Include in the email my last 3 read articles in case I want to go back and read them again.

Suggestion: see how many times a user "reads" the same article. In my opinion is more than once and that is because the articles are pack with a lot of information that requires multiple reads to digest.

Email Communication - Also if the overall objective is to drive conversation around the content, a good test might be to ask: what's my opinion on my last 3 read posts.

The hypothesis being that it will drive me to comment on past read articles, therefore incrementing interaction/conversations, specially if another member replies back.

This is a quick high level example, but you get the idea...

      Example- Email communication:
      Top posts from the week:
      --------
Question? ( What did you think about your last read posts?)
Everyone would love to hear your

Love to see a few more categories:

One loosely called "Offline" or "Traditional Marketing" (dare I use the word) for things that are not necessarily online based - radio/magazine/TV/experiential

Another around "PR/Media Relations" since I see a lot of questions how to get traction with the press.

Finally, a category for a catchall like "Misc" for category of growth hacking that just can't be bucketed. I would love to see those posts!

Clearly many requests have already been submitted before this post came up (via different mechanisms like email/twitter etc).
I think a central place to submit/see all suggestions made + current implementation status (eg planned/to be released in x timeframe etc).
Then just like growthhackers.com, add upvoting for all suggestions.

There are some UX tweaks I would do:

    - Replying on a comment: it seems this process is not entirely clear yet. In some of the topics people reply to my comment, but end up just using the comment box.
    - Comment approval; a little bit more background on this process might be nice. A mere sentence "To keep quality high, we manually review your first x comments". And then ofcourse after those x comments, auto-approve.
    - Posting: I've posted two articles now, but they don't show up immediately in my posts, nor in the latest articles. I suspect these are scanned as well, which warrants a similar message to my previous suggestion.
    - Company focus: This is a feature I lowe! I would love to be able to discuss start-up companies and see an overview for these companies. I think it would be nice if general articles could also receive keywords which we can tie to a company.
    - Reddit-style karma: users love feedback, especially in numbers. How many upvotes did my posts and comments receive?

    • DL

      Dylan La Com

Bruno - thanks for the awesome suggestions! Regarding post submissions and comments, we will have a guidelines page that covers this process.

Agree with you regarding the Company Focus section :) it would be pretty awesome to connect general articles around a longer, in-depth growth analysis.

And in terms of Karma or some sort of points system - it's something we've talked about a lot here, and we'd love to hear any further thoughts from the community about this feature.

    Suggestions for Content Creator Recognition/Involvement:

While I'm more than happy to get credit for posting an article, I feel that there are more opportunities to:

    a) recognize the content creators on the platform more explicitly (than simply be reading the articles) Not sure whether name/photo similar to the article submitter would work or not.

    b) proactively getting the content creators to know about what is happening with & the impact of their content (ie being posted to GH and potentially being discussed further by the community)
For eg A mechanism to automatically notify the article author via twitter that their article was posted to GH & to add to/join in a discussion around it.

Anything that can be done to have content creators be part of any discussions on the platform on a regular basis would just super cool.

Good ideas Anuj. If we created some kind of author tag, then it would be possible to see all other posts by that author and what has been trending. With guest posts so popular these days, it's hard to find everything that a particular author is publishing.

As for notifying the author, we've been using Twitter for some posts, but I agree it would be useful to have a more systematic way of doing it.

  • AA

Another category suggestion: On-Boarding (or OnBoarding ... or Onboarding).

Since this is such an important piece of the puzzle, and one getting talked about more and more (thankfully), it might make a good category to break out on it's own.

        Sure current flows like this:
_1 I submit an article, get notice that it is in the moderation queue
_2 I check repeatedly to see if it is posted
        _3 engage

        new flow would be
_2 email notice of approval/denial of post
        _3 come back and engage

Great idea @anujadhiya! We're going rolling out an update to the site's general taxonomy very soon, and I believe an AMA category would be a great addition once we've released this update. (The release is Topic Pages, which are based on tags/topics, rather than categories. Categories will still be around, but provide a more high-level organization of content, yay!
