Thumbtack is a marketplace for customers to find service professionals such as plumbers and caterers who are nearby and available to do the job. When we launched the site in 2010, we charged a commission on every job that was initiated through the site. We didn’t process the transactions, so we relied on the professionals to let us know when they landed a job through Thumbtack.

    I loved the thought process on this one and the way they iterated through a bunch of potential business models to land on the one that charged their users at the point where they were adding the most value and also aligned the interests of their users with the end customer to get the best overall result. Neat.

      You're right. Sticking to core values and still experimenting and iterating business models requires bold moves and patience to grow any startup.
