No worries, Alex. Nate crushed it with this one.
@sean I thin this might be a better fit for the Growth Hacks category. Mind changing? Thanks so much for sharing, @backlinko !
Also @sean - the link to the article doesn't work, redirects to GH. Sorry to be a pain! :)

Until someone can fix the link to the post this is it: http://blog.mention.com/everything-need-know-building-email-list/
Fixed. Sorry all. Looking into what went wrong on this one.
Nice work @natedesmond, very comprehensive!
These are great insights.
I love the idea of doing a giveaway but the most important factor is always relevance. I've worked and chatted with hundreds of organizations who look at contests and promotions as great ways to build a list and while it is, you must have relevance or you'll potentially suffer from poor quality leads.
If you're running a company that is targeting mechanics, giving away a free iPad is likely going to generate attention from mechanics, bloggers, dentists, engineers, designers and anyone who comes across the promotion. Instead, you want to ensure that the prize you're giving away is specific to their interests and needs. The SumoMe team gets this as their prizes and contests are often books that an entrepreneur or digital strategist would be interested in.
