Years ago, HTML sitemaps offered a clear SEO benefit to websites. They made site crawling easier for search engines and helped to distribute PageRank.

XML sitemaps have long been a more accepted practice to encourage search engines to crawl URLs. But is there any SEO benefit to be gained with HTML sitemaps today.

In this post I discuss HTML sitemaps and SEO, and ask a number of eCommerce business owners, SEO practitioners and marketeers their thoughts about them.

      VERY old school Maeva...

... perhaps I should address animated GIFs in my next post?

I don't know. Maybe it's the same as fashion. These old ugly sweaters that I wore 1000 years ago somehow pop up as trending again. So who knows what the future will bring for old-school tools.

That being said, animated gifs are sexy!

      Thanks Matthew.

I think the jury is split on SEO benefits tbh. One thing seems pretty clear though... an HTML sitemap is no substitute for a solid internal linking architecture.

    Great post, Paul!

Refresh the good old days of my initial SEO interviews... I used to google around answers for such questions, back then.

HTML sitemap is an old-school technique but they can still help in crawlability and crawl budget.

Agreed Jai. Never a substitute for a solid information architecture... but perhaps they still have a place.
