I often hear people talking about "design thinking" as something that is really important, and this article cleared up some of the areas where I was confused. Design thinking can help you and your team generate some good ideas for tests based on deep customer empathy.
I think so often we want to remove a barrier or find a solution to a problem without understanding the "why" behind what is getting the user/customer to that roadblock. The empathy portion to me really starts with moving beyond "what" is happening understanding the "why" behind it.
