Answers to questions that might arise when implementing a cohort analysis for your startup.
  • Which users should I include in the base number of the cohort?
  • How do I treat churn within the first / base month?
  • Should I treat team and individual accounts differently?
  • What about annual vs. monthly plans?
  • Now that I have it, what can I take away from it?

Christoph has one of the top blogs in the SaaS space, especially for anything related to metrics and analysis. This is a guest post but it is equally as insightful.

Good stuff. I just finished updating my churn cohort report to have two options: "relative to previous month" & "show people". Basically, to show the number off people, which now helps me see why in the later months there sometimes is a jump in %. The "relative to previous month" lets me churn % for customers left, or by overall customers for that month.

Next up I'll be working on an engagement cohort report so this was a good post to read before starting on that one.

@Ruben. That sounds awesome. What tool are you using to create those charts? Or maybe you are using excel to create these reports? Both MixPanel and KISSmetrics have robust cohort charts that are easy to setup.

If you are using excel, do you mind sharing your templates? I'd love to be able to use these for my own startup.
