Software as a Service (SaaS) is an incredibly vibrant, pioneering industry — and one of the most fluid. It’s now also extremely competitive. There isn’t much room for 100 percent original solutions; merely attempting to “get there first” and sell a unique SaaS business before maturity is no longer a reliable strategy… There will always be another fresh, subscription-based startup that offers a similar service. So, how do you overcome this saturation…? #1) Enter the right market (with a validated product that solves real problems) and #2) Do it better than anybody else Here are seven SaaS marketing trends to consider for your 2018 growth strategy — while reducing churn and maximizing your recurring revenue.

I love the idea of being a transparent thought leader Sam. The Buffer example resonates with me because I often share how I screwed up and how I fixed the mess up, to benefit my readers. No better way to connect with folks by appearing to be more human, and there is no better way to appear to be more human than to share your screw ups. Thanks for the rocking share.

Sharing personal stories, included the screw ups, mean being more honest.
You are a master of building connections, Ryan!

Me too, my friend! Buffer are probably the most transparent company in the world.

Whenever I see authentic, honest and vulnerable content from an individual and/or brand, I instantly become interested and I remember them, too. There's something very endearing about it. Also: The inspiration it provides is truly admirable!!!

      Thanks for your time, bro!

I've never been savvy with marketing.
I can create, but things become challenging after that.
I appreciate your explanation of "Feature Marketing" and using MailChimp as an example of how it works.
I'm familiar with the company, so it helped break things down.

Thanks for putting this together :)

Chatbots are definitely the trend of the future when it comes to marketing and selling. People LOVE having their questions answered IMMEDIATELY. :)

      Sam Hurley

YES! Spot on, Lorraine. They will become ingrained in *many* aspects of our lives soon...

Immediacy is only expected from customers. If brands don't offer this ... Their competition will be!

Even if some questions can definitely not be answered by chatbots...don't you think, Lorraine?

Very interesting tips on marketing SAAS, and as an aside, I was amazed at the growth in the number of applications.

The Amazon example of customer profile was very easy to relate to.... it's uncanny how Amazon can predict the type of books I enjoy (NOT just by author).

I agree - Buffer's style of sharing the bad and the good is very appealing. It's less painful to learn from their mistakes than from our own.

Thanks Sam for a great article and Erik for sharing. I learned a lot from this.

There's something to learn from Amazon about marketing.
Personalization is just a little part of a great experience I have as an user.

The growth is insane, isn't it Joy!

If only all companies were like Amazon ... Well ... Amazon would then need to up their game hehehe.

Buffer made a name for themselves through content in a big way, although the whole concept of their offering is so simple. Extremely clever!

Thanks for your time, my friend!

Wow Sam it is amazing how fast this sector is growing, 6.5 times fast than the actual economy! Getting something original now too is harder.
I liked your point about making it better than any other and researching into various industries and not just one,
On top is another great option to work with others.
It also looks like personalization will be in everything too.
I don't use a lot of chats but do use it with Hostgator, I find it easier than the telephone :)
Thanks for sharing this informative piece Erik!

That's a stat to remember, right Lisa???

Getting heard in a crowded market all boils down to exactly that — DO IT BETTER.

Connect with customers on a 1:1 basis and reap the rewards. No other brand can touch you if you're doing everything in power to make customers feel delighted.

      Thanks so much for reading!

I believe AI and Machine Learning will be the most powerful trend for the upcoming years. With the technology evolving and improving, we will talk to bots like if they were (almost) humans.

Awesome article Sam! The idea of Feature Marketing is interesting. Also as I noticed with the team at WordLift, at times not only the feature but also the technology behind the product becomes something marketable. For instance, in our case, the fact that we use AI to automate SEO becomes itself a marketable thing. It is like going from Feature Marketing to Technology Marketing :)
