Some of you might be familiar with Brian Balfour from his talks and writings on growth and retention. Brian is sort of an anti-godfather of growth. Where others advocate quick tricks, he talks about process. In a sea of “buy more users,” he tends to emphasize retention and fighting against its mortal enemy, churn. His essay today is a little different from the other “7 X to get Y” posts that are often a big hit, but it's a useful framework for what actually makes for sustained / surprising growth.

Great post - another nice read by the same author is: https://growthhackers.com/articles/how-to-become-a-customer-acquisition-expert-2/ This second one helps think where to focus in on specifically on determining your expertise in growth.

Actually, I do have 2 questions if I may ask :)

I realize more and more how much user psychology matters. It's everywhere: how people behave om the entire marketing funnel, how people response to a specific design etc. But how do you really understand about user psychology? Where to get started and how to contiously learn, how to gain general understanding and how to learn about your specific target users?

And 2nd question, I just get started writing myself and I enjoyed it. But I only want to write things worth reading, for example something deep & comprehensive & refreshing like this post. But it's hard, and the more I read, the higher the bar seem to be, so sometimes I end up abandoning the post I started because I feel others already say it better or my post wasn't good enough... what is your suggestion for that? What's your process for writing?
