Artificial intelligence and machine learning have far surpassed the “eye roll” reaction they once sparked… They have become essential tools for many large e-commerce brands to operate at such scale — and both, while also becoming more advanced, are increasing in prominence with each year that goes by (in a multitude of sectors). The marketing revolution is here, and CMOs can’t escape it. From operational optimization to marketing, personalization and enhanced search…right through to automated inventory planning and dynamic pricing — AI is shaping the future of shopping, at pace. Is your e-commerce brand ahead of the curve, or rapidly falling behind the times? Here Sam ( @Sam___Hurley ) is going to uncover some of the core enhancements that AI and machine learning can bring to your e-commerce business — which serve as solid reasons to swiftly implement this technology and beat your competition (including some groundbreaking AI tools you simply don’t want to miss).

AI is simply amazing. AI has come such a long way, too.
It's not surprising that more companies are planning on investing in AI tools to help generate sales. If I had an e-commerce site, I'd certainly make that investment!

As things currently stand, my company, Wording Well, is small. I operate it alone and do 99% of the work myself. :)
But that's because I'm a word lover who enjoys both writing and editing.

The problems with AI technology in the editing field STILL exist. For example, Grammarly is touted as one of the best grammar-checking tools around, but they are not perfect. I still find mistakes on their part. That is why a human editor is necessary!

      Hey Lorraine! :-)))

Damn right! The tech is insane and there's much more in the pipeline. I think in a few decades we'll be living in a fully-automated world. Scary, yet exciting!

AI can be applied in many ways ... Even a virtual assistant on sites like yours, my friend! :-D

But I definitely agree ... I wonder if there will ever be a time when AI actually surpasses the intelligence of a human?!

      Speak to you soon,
      Sam :-D

Great points made by @sam___hurley here on Ai and eCommerce. It amazes me what can be done today to be proactive online rather than reactive. The tools mentioned seem to make it a great way of generating ROI. I also appreciate the email marketing tips too :)
Thank you Sam and thanks Erik for the share on this one.

      It amazes me too, Lisa.
Think of point #1, for example, "Predictive Marketing".
Through machine learning, AI can form marketing predictions such as:

      - What customers will buy next
      - What customers don’t want to see
      - How they want your website to be displayed
      - Their preferred device and channel
      - Their typical price threshold
      - When they will be more likely to buy

      That's unbelievable!

Cheers Lisa! So glad you found it useful in some way! :-D

Have fun testing the AI tools ... And let me know how you get on with the email tips / links, especially ... I'm interested to hear!

      Catch you soon :-)))

    Hi Sam and Erik,

Personalization is where I see AI making its biggest mark.

Ecommerce has come up short in this department over time, with a heavy emphasis on mass marketing, sending campaigns to nameless, faceless people. But AI can change things in this area, making potential customers feel special. That is what we are all in the business of, right?

    Super article Sam. Well done.

      Agreed, Ryan.
I love how Amazon displays product recommendations on my dashboard.
Sometimes, when I have just a few dollars credited on my PayPal, I wonder around searching to buy something (looking for a special price, or discount), without having in mind nothing in particular. And I end up spending more than I planned, of course!

      Thanks so much, Ryan!

I mentioned this over on LinkedIn:

We're now at the stage where depth of personalization is actually beginning to meet volume of data.

THAT is purely because of AI. It can scale this stuff, at a speed and accuracy that no human ever could do.

      Amazing!

Thanks for your kind words pal,
      Sam :-D

    Hey Erik,

In the e-commerce world, it's hard to have an idea how the customers are going to react to any particular product. AI tools can be useful for sure.
What's the next move? What's the best possible product which can be sold at its best?
    Many things can be known.

EXACTLY, my friend. Hit the nail on the head here...

AI is the enabler. It enables this level of prediction and personalization at scale, leading the way towards massive growth.

If startups harness this tech early on, they will likely overtake their competitors who have been in the game much longer, but have failed to keep up to date.

      Speak soon & thanks again!

AI is something I get REALLY excited about and we're already seeing huge transformations in areas like eCommerce.

I sell far more on Amazon than I do on my own site and it's been interesting seeing how they've implemented and tweaked things over time. I am all too familiar with complex repricers, and between thousands of items our prices change more than 100,000 times a day across all of them (and that isn't an exaggeration!)

I just need to bring some of these over to our own site.

One neat chatbot tool some may want to try out (at the very least to get an idea on what they can do for your business in areas like customer service) is API.ai. I believe it's owned by Google now and is completely free, easy to use and can open your eyes up to the possibilities before investing in a more expensive tool.

    Hi Sam,
Thanks for this post, felt like we are already in the sci-fi era but it is true AI can be used to give a better user experience and better aid customers in buying or on their buyer journey.

I see great length in which you can use AI for the ecom business and better personalize, upsell and make prospects your leads by using highly personalized features particularly for each prospect.

This isn't possible manually, AI can help.

Having said that, a lot of testing is still required I guess to implement a clearer, smoother experience.

      Hi Swadhin,
we are indeed in a fast developing tech era. I remember when I was 17 and I had my first mobile phone Nokia 8110, in 1997. And look where we are today.
Same with AI. It's so fast growing that I can't imagine how it would be in ten years from now.

I learned such a lot from this article, Sam!

Hadn't even thought about the difference between Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, but now I know :-)

As a one-person band, my business is probably too small to implement most of this - beyond personalisation auto-responder messages.

As a customer I (mostly) enjoy good uses of personalised marketing. It's great that Amazon knows what to recommend for me. It obviously works as my spending on Amazon over the years follows about the same upward curve as their revenue. Thankfully much smaller numbers on my credit card!

    Great share, Erik, thanks.

I can see why people, especially those who use e-commerce in their business model would need to utilize any and all tools necessary to gain leads and establish ongoing relationships with their buyers.

I know people, over the years, have behaved differently using their mobile phones and tablets...so this is helpful info.

I will add, though, that to me, there's nothing better than good old fashioned relationships. So a good balance between technology and being personal, authentic and genuine would be the key for me.
