How effective have you found reaching out to employees to find out how much they earn?

Oh, I don't do that. I check average salary for their position in that region by looking at job search sites and available offers. For me, it's more about figuring out how much I'll have to spend to get a similar team rather than knowing how much they spend.

Interesting read Igor, thanks for sharing. A few things that popped in my head:
    - You can also search for your competitor's affiliate links using tools like Majestic and Ahrefs.
    - Following key people from your competitors on Facebook can give a lot of insight into how they operate. It's more personal, and therefore more interesting :)
    - SEO: running a content gap analysis gives a lot of insights. See http://www.pageonepower.com/linkarati/content-gap-analysis for more info.
    - Pricing: you could set up monitoring of their pricing pages to see how it evolves.

Lastly, in the end it's about how you run your business. If you keep chasing your competition you won't be going anywhere.

Following key people is covered there.

As for pricing, good point. I would also add that you can check webarchive and see how the pricing page evolved to the point where it is now.

Thanks, Steven. gonna look into these. By checking how pricing page evolves you mean how prices change or we're talking more about the conversion rate optimization?
I have a guide for price tracking on my blog, gotta see if there's anything useful in there :)

How prices change, usually how they go up :)

Yeah perhaps maybe you can integrate the other post with this one, that would make sense imho.

If you had to use just 3 out of those 25, which one would you focus on? Or if you had 1 hour to establish a decent profile of your competitor, what would you do?

      Interesting question
      I guess I'd go with:

      traffic sources
      PPC
      and becoming their customer
