Well done and very creative. My question is did you use an internal odesk api to send the messages or didi you create another tool? If so I'm interested in the details. It's clear how import.io helps with extracting structured data, not so much how it can be used to send out the messages if at all.

Has anyone tried this before? With forums for example? Any issues with spam-filter kicking in?

We tried this with fiverr. Although it was very effective, but we couldn't do much of it. Firstly fiverr warned for sending links in messages and secondly they blocked our account for using automation. May be Odesk doesn't do this yet.

Awesome but how do you get the contact details?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but for their oDesk API, it looks like they were using odesk's internal messaging system to contact the scraped profiles. You'd need to find a source of profiles that publicizes contact information, or has a messaging service. Or outsource filling in the contact details once you have the list..
